Scanmetals A/S (“Scanmetals”) has acquired a 70% controlling interest in Afatek A/S (“Afatek”). The existing shareholders, including AffaldPlus, ARGO, Norfors, REFA and Vestforbrænding, will maintain a 30% stake in Afatek.
Afatek is a leading player in the treatment and recycling of incinerator bottom ash (IBA) from energy-from-waste facilities. By efficiently recovering valuable resources from residual waste, Afatek ensures that materials are reused for new applications, such as in the manufacturing of metal products or as replacement of gravel in construction projects. This method has a positive impact on the circular economy and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Afatek is headquartered in Copenhagen and will continue to operate from its present locations and with its existing employees.
With the acquisition, Scanmetals strengthens its position in Denmark. Scanmetals is able to position the combined entity as a leader in the recovery of metals and other resources from IBA, setting the stage for further innovation and expansion. This underscores Scanmetals’s long-term commitment to advancing the circular economy through sustainable and innovative practices in metal recycling and resource recovery.
Formed in 2009 and headquartered in Kirke Stillinge near Slagelse, Denmark, Scanmetals is an internationally renowned processor of non-ferrous metals recovered from IBA generated by energy-from-waste facilities. The company’s renowned and industry-leading segregation capabilities utilise a unique, environment-friendly dry process to clean and recover non-ferrous metals from IBA. With almost 200 employees, Scanmetals has operations across Denmark, Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain.
